Key Highlights
CLEVELAND – July 8, 2026 – Avient Corporation, an innovator of materials solutions, today announced that its Dyneema® DM20 fiber has received Type Approval from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for use as filament in synthetic fiber ropes for floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) mooring applications. As the offshore wind market expands globally, developers require reliable, long-term mooring materials. This certification validates Dyneema® DM20 fiber for permanent subsea installations, serving engineers, developers, and mooring line manufacturers.
As floating offshore wind projects scale, mooring system performance plays a critical role in overall system reliability and long-term operation in demanding conditions. The ClassNK certification, issued in February 2026 and valid through February 2031, confirms that Dyneema® DM20 fiber complies with ClassNK guidelines for floating offshore wind turbines, including NKRE-GL-FOWT01 and related standards for marine materials and equipment.
Dyneema® DM20 Fiber For FOWT Mooring
Dyneema® DM20 fiber is a high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fiber that is molecularly engineered at the polymer level to resist fatigue under sustained, permanent loads. As a result, it is an excellent option for permanent mooring lines and subsea tether installations requiring high resistance to creep and long-term fatigue.
Proven Track Record
The ClassNK Type Approval builds on a strong operational track record across Europe, where Dyneema® DM20 fiber has already been deployed in several landmark FOWT demonstration projects. These projects include WindFloat Atlantic (2019), WindFloat Kincardine (2020/21), TetraSpar (2021), and the EFGL project in the Golfe du Lion. In total, more than 100 MW of floating offshore wind demonstration capacity in Europe has been installed with Dyneema® DM20 fiber-based mooring systems, providing valuable operational experience as the industry moves from demonstration to larger-scale deployment. Building on this foundation and its recent ClassNK certification, Dyneema® DM20 fiber is well-positioned to support Japan’s fast-growing FOWT industry.
“Receiving Type Approval from ClassNK marks a major milestone for Dyneema® DM20 fiber. It reflects both the proven performance of the fiber and its growing adoption in the floating offshore wind industry. As one of the world’s most respected classification societies, ClassNK’s certification gives developers, engineers, and mooring line manufacturers in Japan the assurance to confidently specify Dyneema® DM20 fiber in demanding mooring applications,” said Pieter Lemstra, Global Business Director, Marine & Industrial Fibers at Dyneema®, Avient.
Collaboration in Japan
In 2025, Avient signed a general agreement with Toyobo MC to collaborate on the use of Dyneema® DM20 fibers for FOWT mooring solutions in Japan. With the addition of ClassNK certification, this collaboration supports broader adoption of synthetic mooring solutions in Japan’s emerging floating offshore wind market.
